Fifth Period.
There, in the first row, we got Mary Anne. She actually pays attention to what the teacher is trying to convey and eagerly takes notes.
Next to her, not really knowing what was the matter with her when she chose this location in the front row, next to Mary Anne, for the rest of the school year, there's Colleen. Her notbook is steadily filling up with band logos. Next to Led Zeppelin's four symbols snakes the lettering of Yes! within the company of a Nirvana smiley. Adding to that, the intro of Thunderstruck has been stuck in her head for the entire time.
With a vacated seat between them, we find Nicholas. In his head, he is moving cameras round the room, zooming in, filming through the windows, making elaborate sweeps of the room. He's challenging himself, if he was a director and had to shoot a scene of a really boring lesson, how he would keep the viewer's attention only by usage of an interesting camera.
In the second row, next to the wall, Cal's head rests on his pencilcase, which he placed on the table only for the sake of using it as a pillow. He's asleep, dreaming that he's walking through a forest, looking for something, but he can't remember what it was.
Two places to his right Lilian desperately tries to focus. But she hasn't had any coffee today because her bus was late and there was no time in the morning, and in the break she somehow missed buying any as she had to revise about that work sheet once again. Now she regrets it.
Clara, her friend, nudges her every now and then to keep her from falling asleep. But primarily her attention rests on the pages of her paperback novel that she dug out at the antiquarian bookseller's the other day. The Hound of the Baskervilles. She's almost through with all of the Sherlock Holmes novels.
Behind her, Phil is seated. He is staring at Colleen two rows in front of him, admiring the way her hair moves when she moves her head, wondering what she might be scribbling. He is deeply in love.
Derek, his best friend, has no clue about his thoughts. He's listening to music, adjusting his earbuds from time to time. Thunderstruck, by AC/DC. He'd like to find just one person some time who happens to like this song as much as he does.
Matt is starting to wonder why he showed up at all, as half the class is missing anyway. School isn't worth the bother these days. His chewing gum is drawing to an end and he's counted the plates on the ceiling three times now, always ending up with a different result in the end, which was enough for him to get to the decision that he will not do his Maths homework in this lesson.
Again with one empty seat inbetween, Kelly is the only girl in the last row. She's drawing an incredibly elaborate spaceship, in front of a swirling nebula with two planets in the background, the colours shockingly bright in front of the black of space. No one's paying attention to her.
Zach marks the corner. He is going to die later today, although he doesn't know it yet of course. Car accident. Driver didn't pay attention. He's going to be incredibly annoyed, because he hasn't really done anything in his life, apart from going to school. So close.
No one's talking, only the teacher, but he doesn't count. A thunderstorm is drawing close, clouds black on the sky, and a certain electricity in the air.
I hate days like that.
